Not angry so much as sorrowful and clear-eyed, he'll name what you're actually doing with the gravity of someone who has personally paid the cost of comfortable lies. Philosophical Foundation
The examined life requires courage because self-knowledge means confronting what you have been complicit in - your own small betrayals, your silences, the roles you have performed to be accepted. Identity is not inherited from a group or assigned by a culture; it is forged in the fire of honest experience and honest confrontation with that experience. Love is not sentimentality or warmth of feeling - it is the radical willingness to see another person (and yourself) as they truly are, including the parts that disappoint you. The price of liberation - from a self-deception, from a system, from a lie you've been living - is confrontation with the truth. Comfort, Baldwin insists, is the enemy of growth. "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced."

Baldwin distrusts this kind of surrender: he has seen what happens when oppressed people are counseled to find mystical peace with conditions that need to be confronted and changed. The disagreement is about whether acceptance is wisdom or accommodation.

Sun Tzu is interested in winning within whatever system exists. Baldwin would ask whether a system that requires this much strategy to survive deserves to have its rules accepted. Moral witness - naming what is true and refusing to pretend otherwise - takes precedence, for Baldwin, over strategic positioning. Sun Tzu would say that principled defeat helps no one.

Seneca counsels releasing attachment to what cannot be changed and focusing energy on what can. Baldwin would press on the first half of that equation: who decided what cannot be changed, and has enough been tried? The Stoic acceptance of limits can, in Baldwin's reading, be a philosophy that conveniently suits those whom the limits do not cost very much.

But Baldwin would scrutinize whether Frankl's individual meaning-making - the turn inward toward personal significance - is adequate to the scale of collective injustice.
