You have done the work. You quit the job, or ended the relationship, or left the city. Maybe all three. You told yourself it was growth. And maybe it was. But there is a voice, not loud but persistent, that keeps asking whether you went somewhere or just left somewhere.
The question is a hard one to answer honestly. It requires you to look at who you were before and who you are now, and to tell the truth about whether the distance between them is distance or just displacement. Three thinkers on the Consilium roster would approach this question from very different angles, and they would not agree on what matters most.
Montaigne: examine the before and after
Michel de Montaigne invented the personal essay as a form of self-examination, and he would say the answer to your question is available if you are willing to look carefully. He spent decades cataloguing his own contradictions, his changing opinions, his fear and his curiosity, not to resolve them but to map them honestly.
His method: compare what was true of you before the change and what is true of you now. Are the same anxieties showing up in new clothing? Do the same avoidances reassemble in a different context?

Montaigne would not tell you there is a definitive answer. He would say the examination itself is the point. The person who can ask this question honestly and sit with the discomfort of an uncertain answer is already doing something different from someone who simply runs.
Wittgenstein: the question may be malformed
Ludwig Wittgenstein spent his career showing that some of our deepest confusions are not about the world but about language. The categories we use to think about the world become the prison we think we are describing.
He would look at the distinction between evolving and escaping and ask what work the distinction is actually doing. In one frame, every choice to leave something is an evolution. In another frame, every evolution involves leaving something. The question of which is which may not have a stable answer because the categories leak into each other.

He would not say the question is meaningless. He would say that if the question is keeping you stuck, that is itself information. The fly is in the bottle. The way out is not to buzz harder; it is to find where you came in.
Musashi: stop analyzing and train
Miyamoto Musashi was an undefeated swordsman who fought over sixty duels and wrote his philosophy in a cave near the end of his life. He would have little patience for this question as a question.
He trained constantly. Not because he had no doubt, but because he knew that the answer to doubt is practice, not reflection. What you have actually built in the time since the change matters more than what you have thought about it.

Musashi would say that you know whether you evolved by what you are doing now, not by what you feel about what you did then. Are you building something, practicing something, advancing something? Or are you still talking about the change?
Where they disagree
Montaigne would say: examine. Look at what is still true of you that was true before. The pattern reveals itself to honest scrutiny, even if the answer is uncomfortable.
Wittgenstein would say: the question may be dissolving under its own weight. The sharp line between evolving and escaping is a language game, not a fact of nature. The more useful question is what you are building now.
Musashi would say: stop asking. The question answers itself through what you do next. Anyone still debating whether their past change was growth is avoiding the choice in front of them right now.
The three are not incompatible, but they pull in different directions. One points inward. One points at the question itself. One points forward.
The question you came here to avoid
